Chapter 8

Marek went to the house, wondering what he’d find there. In the end, it was his family having breakfast at the kitchen table.

“Morning, Daddy!” Sage said brightly.

Marek went past him and kissed his hair. “Morning, buddy.” He went to the coffee maker and glanced at Juli, who looked bleary-eyed. “I’ll pour you more coffee if you go get Stefan.”

She grumbled, but she got up and went to get their brother. Marek heard the door lock behind them, and he felt Hedy’s eyes on his back as he doctored his coffee.

“Don’t,” he said quietly, hoping to keep her curiosity in check.

He poured more coffee into Juli’s mug, and then his siblings came into the room.

“What’s up?” Stefan asked, looking suspicious.

“Arran wants to run this like a negotiation.” Before Stefan could question him, Marek held up a hand. “It’s either that, or we go downstairs.”

Stefan made a face but nodded. “What do we need to do?”

“He’s coming here for breakfast, but he wants us all to be presentable. Kids, too.”

“We get to dress up?” Aspen asked excitedly.

“Yes, Little Alpha, you get to dress up,” Marek confirmed.

She fist-pumped, while her big brother rolled his eyes.

“Means brushing hair and teeth, too,” Hedy reminded them, which made all three kids whine theatrically.

“I’ll be right back. Make a lot of bacon,” Stefan told nobody in particular. “Oh, and I think Kyler likes toast with butter.” He blushed lightly as he left the kitchen, something the kids missed but the adults all noticed.

Hedy sighed. “Poor boy.”

“He’s limping much less today,” Juli commented thoughtfully. “Wonder why that is.”

“Could be the bond,” Marek mused as he started on more bacon, eggs, and toast.

Aspen, despite being only six, was sharp as a tack and honed in on his words like a missile. “Bond?”

“Wait,” Briar said, his tone incredulous like only an eight-year-old’s could be. “The hunter is Uncle Stefan’s mate?”

Marek turned to his kids. He knew Sage wasn’t quite sure what the whole mates thing even meant, but Aspen had been told as many age-appropriate things as she needed to know as the future alpha of her pack. Briar was just intelligent and observant, and as the older beta, he’d make a good enforcer for his sister if that was what he wanted to do once they grew up.

Marek and Hedy had agreed early that their kids would get to choose their own ways in life. It was trickier with Aspen, of course, because of her alpha status there would always be more expectations for her, but right now, she was still six going on fifteen, and Marek couldn’t have loved her and her brothers more.

“Yes, he is.”

“But he’s the bad man,” Sage said, his lower lip wobbling a little.

“That’s also true, but we’re going to let him explain why he did a bad thing, because he’s Uncle Stefan’s mate, okay, bud?” Marek asked, crouching by the chair Sage sat on. “His name is Kyler, and he won’t ever hurt you or anyone else here again. I promise.”

“Will Arran make sure?” Aspen asked to everyone’s surprise.
